what’s with that

VisionBench 2027.0.0 and VisionGraph 2027.0.0 are out, the first release for the FIRST Canopy season. And you may have noticed the names.

EOCV-Sim is now VisionBench,
and PaperVision is now VisionGraph.

Same tools, same project, same person typing the code at odd hours.

a name that did its job

If you’ve been around FTC for a while, you probably know EOCV-Sim stands for EasyOpenCV Simulator. EasyOpenCV is the library most FTC teams use to run OpenCV on the robot, and back in 2020 I needed a way to run that same code on my desktop, because I couldn’t get anywhere near a robot. So the name was literally the job description: EasyOpenCV, but simulated. As I wrote in my first post, it was a quick fix for a very specific problem, and for a while the name was accurate.

PaperVision was a different kind of name. It came from wanting a tool that made vision feel approachable, something you could sketch out and understand almost like drawing on paper, before ever touching a line of OpenCV. Then the project kept growing. EOCV-Sim got workspaces, the variable tuner and more input sources, and PaperVision turned into a full node editor. At some point the names stopped describing what the tools actually do, and I kept finding myself explaining what “EOCV” even stands for.

The new names are pretty literal, but I like it that way. A bench is where you build, test and tune things, which is exactly what you do with VisionBench. And a graph is, well, what a node editor is made of, so VisionGraph says what it is on the label. Nothing changes about how you get them: VisionBench still bundles VisionGraph, and this release also comes with a big round of improvements, though the rename is the main story today.

why now?

Because this is a good moment for it, and it only gets harder the longer you wait. I want deltacv to keep growing for years, and I don’t want the name of a single tool to define what it can become. These names leave room for that, and they fit the direction I have in mind for the project a lot better than the old ones did.
